Учебник: «Английский в фокусе», Москва, Express Publishing — «Просвещение», 2008

Тема:American High Schools (Module3, Culture Corner 3)

Цель урока: совершенствовать коммуникативную компетенцию учащихся.

Задачи урока: развитие навыка и умения аналитического чтения,

формирование умений говорения на базе прочитанного текста.

Учебно-образовательные:

  • Активизация в речи грамматико-лексических способов выражения вкусов и предпочтений,

  • Развитие навыка просмотрового чтения и чтения с детальным пониманием,

  • Расширение лексики по теме “Образование».

Воспитательные:

  • Развитие навыков сотрудничества при командной работе по тематической теме в ограниченном лимите времени,

  • Поддержка высокой личностной оценки и самооценки подростков, помощь в личностном самоопределении учащихся,

Оборудование:

  • УМК Spotlight 10 (Student Book и аудиозапись);

  • дидактический раздаточный материал;

  1. Pre-reading Activities

Teacher: It is known that if somebody wants to have some success in his work, he or she should know why he has to do it and what he should do to be successful. Today , the topic of our lesson is “Educational Systems”. Today we are going to compare different Education Systems. We are also going to train skills of oral speaking and listening and enlarge our vocabulary.

A.Discussion. Discuss the following questions in pairs or small groups.

1.Where do you go every day?

2.What form are you in?

3.How many lessons do you usually have?

4.How many subjects do you have?

5.What subjects do you prefer?

6.What subjects are difficult for you?

7.Do you like your school life?

B. Predicting. Take a look at the table. What can you say about USA school system.

B. Reading for Details

1. Read the text ex.2 p. 57 carefully and сору out the key words to describe American High Schools . Fill in the chart:

2. Read the text ex.2 p. 57 and complete the gaps (1-8) with the correct word formed from the words in brackets. Compare with your partner. Listen and check.

There are three semesters. They have no school on the following: Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and during summer vocation.
The compulsory subjects are English, Maths, Science, Social Studies and Physical Education.
The students can also choose the “electives” in such areas as Foreign Languages, Fine Arts, Vocational Studies.

III. Post-reading Activities

Retelling. With a partner, look at the table again. Take turns to tell about Education system in the USA.

IV. Role Play

The two friends would like to spend a year in American high school. Discuss the problem.

V. Discussion.

You know that education both in Russia and USA have got some advantages and disadvantages or you may call pluses and minuses. Please, write all advantages and disadvantages. /обучающиеся пишут в тетрадях/

And now one more task for our discussion. Imagine that you have to choose a country to study. Put these factors in order of priority from 1 to 12 / 1=the most important/. Which ones would influence you most in making your decision?

Speech Training.

  4. Teachers.

  5. Extracurricular activities.

  6. Multiculturism.

  2. What stages is American education divided into?

  3. What types are state schools divided into?

  4. State does not control private schools, does it?

  5. What do many young people do after leaving school?

VI. TV-Bridge » The USA — Russia»

Now, please, let’s divide into 2 groups. Your group is pupils’ group from the USA and another group is Russian pupils. You are to ask each other questions and answer them. I’ll be the leader of your TV-Bridge.

VII. Conclusion.

Teacher: discuss in groups:

  1. Discuss Russian and American Education systems and try to name all the factual differences between them. Be ready to present the result of your work.
