Dear friends! Today our pupils make a performance in honor of great poets of

Great Britain. Great Britain is a country that has made its great contribution into world’s culture.

There are many world- famous names in English literature: William Shakespeare, Robert Burns,

George Gordon Byron and many others.

P2

English poetry has its deep-rooted and long- lived traditions. They go back as to the folk songs and ballads, tales and legends of English people. That’s why we begin our performance with the story about English Folklore.

(Pupils perform the song “Hush- a-bye”)

P1

Each epoch” said S.Marshak the most talented translator of English poetry, “selects from the world, what is closest to it in spirit”

P2

English folklore immortalized the name of Robin Hood and his men who fought against oppression and injustice.

Robin Hood is a partly legendary, partly historical character who lived in the 12th 13th

centuries, the hero of many ballads robbed the rich to give the poor. These ballads

handed down from one generation to another.

Now you’ll see a scene based on legends about Robin Hood.

(The scene is performed).

English folklore is rich in fair-tales and anecdotes full of humor and lyricism, love of freedom.

(A dance is performed).

Let us see a scene based on folk tales and anecdotes and let us smile.

(A scene)

(The song “Donna” is performed.

P1

Speaking about English folklore we can’t touch upon the English children’s folklore.

A remarkable poet, an outstanding master in translation, a man of great ranger of interests

and knowledge S.Y.Marshak studied thoroughly the English language and the history

of English literature. In the university library in London he accidently came across the English

Children’s folklore full of fanciful humour. He translated into Russian these classical pieces of poetry, songs, rhymes and limericks which were rather difficult to be translated.

P1.

We also tried to do more than that we had a competition.

Now we are going our best translation of children’s folklore.

(Limericks are performed)

A very old man of Japan

Wrote verses that never could scan.

When asked why this was,

He replied, “It’s because I always try to get as many words into the last line as I possibly can.”

This little pig went to market,

This little pig stayed at home,

This little pig had roast beef,

This little pig had none,

And this little pig cried,

Wee-wee-wee-wee-wee,

I can’t find my way home.

Humpty – Dumpty sat on a wall.

Humpty-Dumpty had a great wall.

All the king’s horses,

All the king’s men,

Couldn’t put Humpty together again.

Sir Christopher Wren

Said, I am going to dine with some men

If anybody calls

Say I am designing St. Paul’s.
