Speaking
T: By the way, today we have a special guest. Come in, please. Boys and girls, do you know his name? Who is our guest?
Ps: He is George Washington.
T: You are right. He is the first president of the United States of America, George Washington. And now he’ll tell us about The USA.
G.W.: Hello, children. I’m glad to see you. Let me tell you about this amazing country.
The United States of America is the fourth largest country in the world (after Russia, Canada and China). It is called the United States, the US, the USA, the States, America. The USA occupies the southern part of Northern America, Alaska in the north and some islands, including the Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean. The total area of the country is over nine and a half million square kilometres. The USA borders on Mexico in the south and Canada in the North. It has sea border with Russia, too. The western coast of the country is washed by the Pacific Ocean, and its eastern coast — by the Atlantic Ocean.
The USA comprises 50 states and one federal district, the District of Columbia, and has several territories. The capital of the country is Washington, D. C, situated in the district of Columbia. The population of the country is about 250 million. The USA is a very large country and has different climatic regions. The USA is a state of rivers and lakes. America’s largest rivers are the Mississippi, the Missouri, the Rio Grande and the Columbia. The Great Lakes on the border with Canada are the deepest and the largest in the USA. The highest mountains are the Rocky Mountains, the Cordillera and the Sierra Nevada.
The USA is rich in natural and mineral resources. It produces copper, iron ore and coal. It is a highly developed industrial and agricultural country. The USA became the world leading country in the 19th century.
T: Thank you for your story.

Listening and speaking.
T: It’s high time to talk about the main cities of the USA and their sights. Could you name the biggest cities? (создание диаграммы).
Ps: Washington, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Las Vegas
T: Very good. Let’s start our travelling from the main city-Washington D.C. Who wants to tell us about it?
P1-P2: Washington, the capital of the United States of America, is situated on the Potomac River in the District of Columbia. The district is named in honour of Columbus, the discoverer of America.
Washington is not the largest city in the USA. It has a population of 900 000 people. Washington is a one-industry town. That industry is government.
Washington has many historical places. The largest and tallest among the buildings is the Capitol with its great House of Representatives and the Senate chamber. There are no skyscrapers in Washington because no other building must be taller than the Capitol. The White House is the President’s residence. All American presidents except George Washington (the White House was not yet built in his time), have lived in the White House. It was built in 1799. It is a two-storied, white building.
Not far from the Capitol is the Washington Monument, which looks like a very big pencil. It rises 160 metres and is hollow inside. A special lift brings visitors to the top in 70 seconds from where they can enjoy a wonderful view of the whole city.
The Jefferson Memorial was built in memory of the third President of the USA, Thomas Jefferson, who was also the author of the Declaration of Independence. The memorial is surrounded by cherry-trees. The Lincoln Memorial devoted to the memory of the 16th President of the US, the author of the Emancipation Proclamation, which gave freedom to Negro slaves in America.
T: What is the largest city in the USA?
Ps: New York.
T: Yes. P3-P4 will tell us about this multicultural city.
P3-P4: New York is one of the largest cities in the world. Its population is over 11 million people. New York is an industrial and cultural center of the country. Most business is centered in Manhattan Island. The whole area is very small, that’s why the sky-scrapers were invented in New York and, especially, in Wall Street. Wall Street is a narrow street with big houses, but it is well known all over the world as the busiest street in the USA. There are two more world-famous streets — Broadway and Fifth Avenue. Broadway is the center of the theatres and night life. It is known as “The Great White Way” because of the electric signs which turn night into day. Fifth Avenue is the great shopping, hotel, and club avenue.
People who come to New York by sea are greeted by the Statue of Liberty. It has become a symbol of the city and an expression of freedom to people all over the world. The Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, the United Nations building, Central Park, Times Square — all these world famous sights are situated here. New York is often called the cultural capital of the USA. There are more than 800 museums in New York. One of the best known is the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
T: The second largest city is Los Angeles. And our guides to this beautiful city will be P5-P6.
P5-P6: Los Angeles is America’s second largest city. Its name comes from the Spanish for ’the City of Angels’, because the land was originally claimed for Spain by missionaries in 1781. It became an American city in 1850 when California became part of the United States. Los Angeles is a popular place because of its pleasant semi- tropical climate and beautiful Pacific coast. In fact there are no unpleasant seasons in this city. Almost everyone drives to work. There are about four million private cars in Los Angeles and the level of air pollution is one of the highest in the country. Suburbs like Hollywood, the center of the movie industry, and Beverly Hills, where famous actors and other celebrities live, have also made Los Angeles a tourist attraction. The population of Los Angeles is about four million people. In Los Angeles there are people from about 140 countries speaking approximately 86 different languages and currently call Los Angeles home.
T: The third largest city is Chicago. P7-P8 will introduce this “Gangster” city to you.
P7-P8: It is a huge city in the northeastern part of the USA near Lake Michigan.
Chicago is called the Windy City because of the strong winds that blow through it. Chicago is an industrial center. The city has always attracted a diverse population of Americans and new immigrants in search of jobs. Chicago is also a railroad and trucking hub. Its airport O’Hare is the busiest in the world.
The world’s first skyscraper was constructed in Chicago, in 1885. The central part of the city has several of the world’s tallest buildings, including the Sears Tower, which at 110 storey high is the tallest in the United States.
Chicago is a major center of higher education, with numerous colleges and universities. The prestigious University of Chicago founded in 1890 is situated here.
T: And the last city we are going to visit today is San Francisco.
P9-P10: San Francisco is the most interesting city in the United States. It occupies the northern end of a peninsula, so it is surrounded on three sides by water. San Francisco is famous for its bridges, fog and foghorns. The greatest attraction of San Francisco is the Golden Gate Bridge, which has become the symbol of the city. San Francisco is called the city of hills because it has 40 hills. It is famous for its picturesque cable cars, which climb these hills, and for its bright houses.
Of course, San Francisco has a lot of museums. But if you are tired of museums, you can visit Golden Gate Park, one of the largest man-made parks in the world, or go to Shakespeare Garden where you can find every flower and plant ever mentioned by the bard. San Francisco has a reputation as an intellectual, liberal, and slightly crazy city and his sights attract millions of tourists every year.
